Public art creates an opportunity to embrace community and culture. My focus is on creating public art works that distinguish significant qualities of evolving communities and cultures. Aesthetically, I am interested in both the physicality of form and the scale of my work. Much of my past work has been an exploration of the relationships between form, scale, tension and balance.
My process of making directly informs my artwork. I am drawn to the visceral and physical connection of construction and assembly. Using steel, wood and found objects my recent works have centered on large-scale sculptures that visually challenge rules of the physical world and often formally reference cultural objects. Working closely with varied committees and individuals I have completed many site-specific projects as well as exhibited large-scale sculpture across the Southeast and Midwest. Duke Oursler
